Porcelain at a Glance
Porcelain — engineered ceramic for indoor and outdoor surfaces
Porcelain has rapidly emerged as the new premium surface countertop category nearly four decades ago — combining natural quartz with advanced manufacturing to deliver surfaces that never need sealing and last a lifetime.
Manufactured by leading European brands (Dekton from Cosentino, Neolith from Spain, XTONE from Porcelanosa), Porcelain has grown into one of the world’s most recognized quartz surface brands. Their engineered quartz is made primarily from natural quartz — one of the hardest minerals on earth — combined with pigments and polymer resins under intense vibro-compression and kiln curing. The result is a non-porous, scratch-resistant, stain-resistant surface backed by a lifetime residential warranty.
With 300+ varieties spanning the Dekton, Neolith, Porcelanosa XTONE, Florim, Laminam, and Daltile collections, Porcelain offers everything from clean modern solids to marble-look perfection to concrete-style finishes and wood-grain effects. The ICON collection is their latest innovation — a crystalline silica-free surface made with approximately 85% recycled content. At Absolute GM we fabricate every porcelain slab in our own Kirkland shop using STONEEX digital templating and CNC equipment — ensuring sub-millimeter accuracy from template to installation.

Porcelain countertops — FAQ
Porcelain countertops in Seattle range from $80 to $140 per square foot installed. Mid-tier brands like Florim and Daltile run $80–$120/sq ft. Premium European brands — Dekton, Neolith, XTONE — fall in the $95–$140 range. Final pricing depends on slab thickness (6mm, 12mm, 20mm), edge profile, cutouts, and whether installation is indoor or outdoor. Use our calculator above for an estimate.
Yes — this is one of porcelain’s biggest advantages. Porcelain is UV-stable (won’t fade), freeze-thaw resistant, non-absorbent, and warranted for outdoor use by brands like Dekton, Neolith, and XTONE. AbsoluteGM has installed porcelain outdoors throughout Seattle, Bellevue, and Mercer Island for outdoor kitchens, BBQ surrounds, fire pit surrounds, and even building cladding. PNW rain, freezing winters, and summer sun don’t affect porcelain.
Porcelain is the thinnest engineered surface available. Standard thicknesses: 6mm (ultra-thin, best for cladding and vertical surfaces), 12mm (popular for countertops, weight-saving), and 20mm (full thickness for heavy-use kitchens or outdoor work). Edge buildups can create the appearance of thicker traditional countertops while keeping weight manageable. We can also recommend 6mm porcelain for renovations where weight matters or for cabinet face panels.
It depends on use. Dekton (Cosentino) leads in outdoor warranties and ultra-thin slab options. Neolith excels in book-matched marble looks and large-format slabs. Porcelanosa XTONE offers the widest design range. Laminam is the choice for cladding and architectural surfaces. SapienStone and Daltile are excellent value options. We can match your project requirements (price, look, application) to the right brand at our showroom.
Yes — porcelain is one of the most heat-resistant surfaces available, rated up to ~1100°F. You can place hot pans, hot pots, even hot bakeware directly on porcelain without trivets. This is a major advantage over engineered quartz (which can be damaged by heat above ~300°F due to the resin content). Porcelain’s heat resistance comes from being fired at extreme temperatures during manufacturing.
No — porcelain is fully non-porous and never needs sealing. Daily care is just soap and water. It resists stains, etching, scratching, and bacteria. Avoid abrasive cleaners and steel wool to preserve the polish. For polished finishes, occasional buffing keeps the shine. For matte and textured finishes, no special care needed beyond regular cleaning.
