Marble has been quarried for centuries from sites in Carrara and Statuario (Italy), Mount Pentelicus and the Greek islands, and Macael in southern Spain. It forms when limestone gets metamorphosed under heat and pressure; the dramatic veining is created by mineral impurities flowing through the rock during recrystallization. The slabs we install today are cut from quarries that have been operating since Roman times, but modern wire-saw and CNC equipment make slab sizes and finishes available that weren’t practical a generation ago. The result is a polished or honed surface unique to natural stone. Each slab carries the supplier’s cosmetic and structural warranty.

Marble installed in Seattle typically runs $75 to $180 per square foot. Carrara White and Bianco Carrara sit at the lower end ($75 to $110). Calacatta Gold, Statuario, and Calacatta Viola fall in the middle ($110 to $140). Rarer slabs like Calacatta Borghini or large-format book-matched Calacatta push past $180. Pricing varies more by slab availability than variety choice; we quote the actual slabs from our supplier yards for your project, not generic tier estimates.
Yes, both. Marble etches from anything acidic (lemon, wine, tomato sauce, coffee, even sparkling water). Etching is a chemical reaction with the calcium carbonate in the stone, not a stain. A honed finish camouflages etching far better than polished. Staining is a separate concern; oils and pigments soak into unsealed marble, and proper sealing prevents that. Most marble homeowners we work with come to appreciate the patina that develops over time as character. If you want a kitchen surface that stays pristine, marble is not the right pick. Quartzite or engineered quartz would suit better.
Marble needs sealing 2 to 4 times per year in a working kitchen, 1 to 2 times per year for bathroom vanities. We seal every marble installation at fabrication with a premium impregnating sealer (included at no extra cost). Resealing yourself is straightforward: wipe on with a soft cloth, wait 5 minutes, buff off. Sealing prevents oil and pigment staining; it does not make marble etch-proof. Nothing does. Day-to-day cleaning is pH-neutral stone cleaner only; avoid vinegar, lemon juice, and standard kitchen cleaners on polished marble.
Marble works beautifully in kitchens if you accept that it will etch and develop patina over time. We install marble in Seattle kitchens most often as large island tops where etching reads as character, baking stations (marble stays naturally cool, ideal for pastry), and full-height backsplashes (vertical surfaces never see acid spills). If you cook hard, have small children, or get bothered by water rings on a wooden table, marble probably is not the right choice. For families who want zero-maintenance counters we recommend quartzite or engineered quartz. For homeowners who love the look and accept the trade-off, marble in the kitchen is rewarding.

Marble is excellent for bathroom vanities. The acidic-spill exposure that troubles kitchen marble does not really exist in a bathroom; water, soap, and hand lotion do not etch marble. Vanities also see less daily traffic, so sealing once or twice a year is enough. Most of our Calacatta Viola and Calacatta Gold installations end up in primary baths and powder rooms. The lower maintenance burden plus marble’s natural elegance makes it our most-requested bathroom surface.
