Granite has been the kitchen-counter standard for generations. Quarried from cooled magma deposits, it brings exceptional heat tolerance and a one-of-a-kind look every slab. With proper sealing it stays beautiful for decades.
Quarried from sites in Brazil, India, China, USA, and South Africa, Granite has grown into one of the oldest and most-used countertop materials. Granite forms when magma cools slowly underground, crystallizing into the hard, crystalline rock we quarry today. Different mineral compositions create the color variations across varieties. Granite is porous enough to need annual sealing (we include a 5-year sealer at install) and Mohs 6-7 hard, so it resists scratching from anything short of a diamond. Each slab comes with the quarry supplier’s cosmetic and structural warranty.
With 200+ varieties spanning the Black Galaxy, Tan Brown, Verde Bahia, Uba Tuba, Giallo Veneziano, and other classic granite varieties, Granite offers everything from classic black-and-gold speckles to bold blue and green veining to dramatic earthy darks. At Absolute GM we fabricate every granite slab in our own Kirkland shop using STONEEX digital templating and CNC equipment — ensuring sub-millimeter accuracy from template to installation.

Granite countertops FAQ
Granite installed in Seattle typically runs $50 to $150 per square foot. Standard imports from India and China (Tan Brown, Uba Tuba, Giallo Veneziano) start around $50-$80. Mid-range Brazilian granites (Absolute Black, Verde Bahia) sit at $75-$110. Premium exotics with rare veining (Blue Bahia, Crystallo, Patagonia) reach $110-$150 or higher. Granite is sold one slab at a time from supplier yards; pricing depends on slab availability that month more than variety name. Edge profile and cutouts add 10-15% on top of the slab cost.
Granite needs sealing about once a year for kitchen use. We seal every granite installation at fabrication with a premium impregnating sealer rated for 5 years. Resealing yourself between professional applications is straightforward: wipe on with a soft cloth, wait the time on the can (usually 5-10 minutes), buff off. A quick water-bead test tells you when it’s time: drop water on the surface and if it absorbs within a minute, reseal. Daily cleaning is pH-neutral stone cleaner; avoid acidic sprays on polished granite.
Granite is essentially heatproof for kitchen use. The stone forms when magma cools deep underground, so it’s already been through temperatures far higher than any cooktop. You can take a cast-iron pan straight from a 500°F oven and set it on granite without a trivet. The only caveat is repeated thermal shock from very cold to very hot in the same spot can stress granite at sealed joints over many years; using a trivet for that specific case extends life.

Granite handles Pacific Northwest outdoor use very well. It’s UV-stable (won’t fade in sun), naturally frost-resistant, and structurally sound through freeze-thaw cycles. Common outdoor applications in Seattle: outdoor kitchens, BBQ surrounds, fire pit caps, pool surrounds. For outdoor installations we typically use a thicker mineral-impregnating outdoor-grade sealer and recommend resealing twice a year instead of once due to rain exposure. Recent outdoor granite projects on the Eastside have held up well through two winters.
Both are great choices but for different reasons. Granite wins on: heat resistance (place hot pans directly), outdoor use, value pricing, natural one-of-a-kind looks. Engineered quartz wins on: maintenance (no sealing), consistent color, stain resistance (no sealing needed), kid-friendly.
