The Challenge

CNC-Fabricated Melamine Particle Board Sub-Structure Support: Manufacturing and Tolerance Compliance Challenge

The challenge involves the design and fabrication of a custom CNC-cut sub-support system using melamine-faced particle board intended to provide precise leveling and structural backing for finish materials such as stone, quartz, or porcelain surfaces. The primary difficulty lies in maintaining strict dimensional accuracy across all components while accounting for material limitations such as particle board deflection, edge fragility, and moisture sensitivity.
Additional complexity arises from ensuring compatibility with installation conditions, including uneven site substrates, variable load distribution, and integration with cabinetry or framing systems. CNC programming must translate architectural specifications into manufacturable components without cumulative tolerance drift, while maintaining clean edge geometry and reliable fastening zones.
The solution must balance cost efficiency with performance requirements, ensuring the sub-structure delivers consistent support without compromising the integrity of the final surface installation or introducing visible deformation over time.

Our Approach

Precision and Coordination

Our solution began with a precise digital laser scan to capture the intricate details of the kitchen and vanity areas in Bellingham. This technology ensured that every dimension was accurately recorded, allowing for a precise fit of XTONE Bottega Antracita material.

In our Kirkland facility, we employed advanced CNC fabrication techniques to cut the porcelain surfaces to exact specifications. The mitered edge for the XTONE Bottega Antracita was executed with precision, ensuring a perfect fit and finish. Special attention was given to the cooktop cutout, ensuring it integrated seamlessly into the design.

Managing the logistics of a two-stage installation involved coordinating multiple site visits. Our team worked to ensure that each stage of the installation was completed efficiently, with the first phase focusing on the kitchen and the second on the vanities. The use of TopZero undermount sinks further enhanced the sleek, modern aesthetic desired by the client.
