When porcelain is clearly the right answer

Your kitchen sees direct sunlight or you want it outdoors. Porcelain is fully UV-stable. Quartz can yellow under direct sun over years; porcelain does not. For Seattle homes with south- or west-facing kitchens, sunrooms, or outdoor kitchens, porcelain is the lowest-maintenance choice that still looks premium.

You cook with high heat and you do not want to think about it. Porcelain handles direct heat up to 1000°F. You can put a hot pan on it from the stove, no trivet, no stress. Quartz tops out around 300°F before the resin binder begins to discolor.

You want a marble look without the marble headaches. Modern porcelain manufacturing produces remarkably convincing reproductions of Calacatta, Statuario, and other premium marbles — but porcelain does not etch from acidic spills, does not stain, and does not need sealing.

You are doing a thin-profile minimalist design. Porcelain comes in 6 mm and 12 mm slabs. With a mitered edge buildup, a porcelain countertop can read as a clean half-inch line — much thinner than the standard 3 cm quartz or marble look.

The countertop will be subjected to abuse. Commercial kitchens, schools, hospitality projects, vacation rentals — anywhere durability matters more than warmth.

When porcelain might not be the right call

You love the warmth and heft of natural stone. Porcelain feels different — slightly cooler, slightly more uniform. It is beautiful, but it does not have the geological character of a true marble or quartzite.

Your fabricator is not experienced with porcelain. Cutting and finishing porcelain requires specialized blades, water cooling, and CNC programming that is different from natural stone. AbsoluteGM has been fabricating porcelain since the category emerged in the U.S.

Budget is the dominant constraint. Premium porcelain (Dekton, Neolith, Lapitec) sits at the upper end of countertop pricing, often $90–$150 per square foot installed. Standard porcelain runs $70–$110.

How to decide

  1. Read our porcelain page for the full breakdown of brands, sizes, and pricing.
  2. Use the calculator at our quote page for an estimate based on your specific project.
  3. Visit our Kirkland shop or have us pull samples — porcelain looks dramatically different in person than in any brochure.

For most Seattle kitchens with serious cooking, indoor-outdoor flow, or modern thin-profile design, porcelain is now the default we recommend over quartz or marble. Call (425) 814-1011 to talk through your specific project.
