Choosing a countertop is choosing countertop category nearly four decades ago — combining natural quartz with advanced manufacturing to deliver surfaces that never need sealing and last a lifetime.
AbsoluteGM fabricates all six major countertop categories in our Kirkland shop using the same STONEEX digital templating and CNC equipment. Each material has different fabrication considerations: natural stone (granite, marble, quartzite) needs careful slab selection because every slab is unique; engineered quartz and porcelain are uniform across slabs but porcelain requires diamond tooling; sintered stone is the hardest material to fabricate and adds 15-20% labor. We quote each material accurately based on its actual handling characteristics.

Countertop comparison FAQ
There’s no single “best” — the right material depends on your priorities. Best value: granite. Lowest maintenance: engineered quartz or porcelain. Best heat resistance: sintered stone or granite. Best for outdoor: porcelain, sintered stone, or granite. Most luxurious aesthetic: marble (vanity) or quartzite (kitchen). Granite typically offers the best value, starting around $50/sq ft installed for popular varieties like Black Galaxy and Tan Brown. Mid-tier engineered quartz (MSI Q, Q-Premium Natural) starts around $55/sq ft. Standard travertine and basic limestone fall in similar ranges. Premium options like Calacatta marble, Macaubas Fantasy quartzite, and exotic granites can reach $200+. Material choice is one factor; edge profiles, cutouts, and project complexity also affect total cost.
Top outdoor picks: Porcelain (UV-stable, freeze-thaw resistant, warranted outdoor by Dekton, Neolith, XTONE), Sintered stone (most heat-resistant, fire-rated, full outdoor warranty), and Granite (natural durability, excellent value). Quartzite works outdoors with care (more frequent sealing). Engineered quartz and marble are not recommended outdoors. Pacific Northwest weather (rain, freezing winters, summer sun) is handled best by porcelain and sintered stone.
Engineered quartz, porcelain, and sintered stone are all non-porous and never need sealing. They resist stains, etching, and bacteria with just soap and water. Granite, quartzite, and limestone need annual sealing. Marble needs sealing every 6–12 months. Soapstone can be left unsealed (develops natural patina). For low-maintenance kitchens, engineered quartz and porcelain are top picks.
Best heat resistance, ranked: Sintered stone (~1700°F — the most heat-resistant surface available, Lapitec specifically is fire-rated). Porcelain (~1100°F — fully heat-resistant). Granite (excellent — you can place hot pans directly). Quartzite (excellent). Marble (good but can crack with thermal shock). Engineered quartz is the weakest — resin content can be damaged by heat above ~300°F (always use trivets).
For one-of-a-kind aesthetics, natural stones win: marble (luminous classical veining), quartzite (dramatic varied veining like Macaubas Fantasy), exotic granite (Blue Bahia, Costa Esmeralda). Each natural-stone slab is geologically unique — no two pieces alike. Engineered surfaces (quartz, porcelain, sintered stone) prioritize consistency — predictable patterns that can be matched across multi-slab installations. We recommend viewing actual natural-stone slabs at our Kirkland showroom or supplier yards before fabrication.
